Our Monthly Cheese and Wine Pairing
For true cheese and wine aficionados, we’ve refreshed this page to help you effortlessly find the perfect wine and cheese pairing. We handpick each cheese and match it with the perfect wine chosen by our Wine Director, Jeff.
For thousands of years, traditions, customs, and refined tastes from around the world—many predating the Roman Empire—have brought together cheeses, wines, and delicious breads. While every culture has its own unique approach to pairing cheese and wine, the golden rule is to enjoy them in whatever way best suits your personal taste. Still, MainstreeT Wine & Spirits offers some specific wine and cheese pairing guidelines for you to consider.
For the quick fix -
Most styles of Cheeses
White Wines
Most white wines pair well with nearly any type of cheeses like gouda, camembert, mozzarella, asiago and goat to name a few.
Bloomy rind Cheeses
Red wines or dry champagne
Fruity, light reds like Beaujolais or Pinot Noir pair wonderfully with bloomy rind cheeses, such as Castello Brie or Cambozola Triple Cream, while a dry Champagne adds a sophisticated touch.
Medium to hard Cheeses
White and red fruity wines
White, fresh, and medium-to-hard cheeses like our "Hoopla" Cheddar or the Fiscalini Truffle Cheddar pair beautifully with crisp, fruity wines, whether red or white. For white wines, consider a Vouvray, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, or Pinot Gris. For reds, try a Gamay, New World Pinot Noir, or a fruit-forward Merlot.
Goat Cheeses
Dry Reds
If you’re a fan of goat cheese, you’ve got to try our LeClaire Creamery brands or the Pie-Eyed Goat, which we love to pair with a glass of dry red wine like Malbec, Côtes du Rhône, or Cabernet Franc.
Creamy Cheeses
Full-bodied wines
Smooth, creamy cheeses like our Royal Hollandia Creamy Mild Gouda or Castello Creamy Havarti pair beautifully with full-bodied wines such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, or Bordeaux.
Blue Chesses
Sweet Wines
When serving sweet wines like Sauternes, Ruby Port, or Riesling, pair them with a wedge of blue cheese, such as the rich and Creamy Sexy Blue or the delightful Shaft's Serendipity Blue & Cheddar Cheese combo.
Everyone's tastes are different, but if you’re looking to try excellent goat cheeses with dry reds, match your favorite hard cheese with a fruit-forward white wine, or simply want to try out something completely new at your next wine and cheese tasting party, you can rely on MainstreeT Wine & Spirits to satisfy your palate.
This month we’re featuring a traditional, old-world, rustic, and highly acclaimed Pinot Noir from Santa Barbara, nestled in California’s Central Coast.
Pali Huntington Pinot Noir 2022
92/100 Wine Enthusiast
"This larger production bottling for the winery always delivers, starting this vintage with pomegranate, raspberry jam, toasted herb and light pepper aromas. The palate is lively in peppery spice and layered in floral geranium and rose flavors, with a texture that grips into the finish."
We paired it with one of our favorites – Creamy Sexy Mushroom. This triple cream cheese bursts with forest mushroom flavors. Let it warm slightly to enjoy its luxuriously smooth, creamy texture and earthy undertones that perfectly complement a classic Pinot. From The Great American Cheese Private Collection, this pasteurized cow’s milk Triple Cream Camembert is aged for two months, featuring a white bloomy rind and a soft, creamy center generously studded with porcini and chanterelle mushrooms.
